Kuro Kage Shogun
Kuro Kage Shogun
The "Black Shadow” Shogun katana is a full remounted and repolished Forge Folded Bushi katana from the Dynasty Forge line. This has been a personal blade of mine for a year and a half, personally picked myself from the blades I’ve been working on. It features a 28.5 inch Bushi class forge folded blade that was polished in a hybrid method, and finished off with the traditional Japanese Hazuya and Jizuya stones. The hamon is a striking gunome - choji mix. The clay of the yaki ire process apparently lifted, turning a somewhat bland hamon into a beautifully wild and uncontrolled hamon pattern which almost reaches the bo hi in several areas. The habuchi (cluster of nioi crystals that forms the white outline of the hamon) is quite beautiful and visible on this blade.
The new 12 inch tsuka core was carved from poplar wood in a rikko (hourglass) shape, and a full wrap of premium quality japanese stingray skin was added with a very large collection of large nodes surrounding the emperor node. It was wrapped in imported Japanese silk over a pair of Buddhist Ken menuki. The fuchi and kashira are black buffalo horn. The seppa are solid copper in a scalloped design. The tsuba is a solid steel Higo design just like the earlier Kuro Kage. The habaki is also solid copper, and was made by fellow Japanese customizer “Skip” Gardner.
The saya is in an ishime (stone) finish. The kurikata was ground down and a bronze kurikata fitted over it. The iron kojiri added to the end is in a matte grey finish.
This blade handles remarkably well, and is a beautiful successor to the Kuro Kage katana, the most viewed blade on this website. I guarantee it handles like “an extension of the arm” as the phrase goes.
