Kotonbo Maru

The “Little Dragonfly” katana is a Kissaki Moro Ha Zukuri blade, designed after the famous Kogarasu Maru (Little Crow) Tachi. The double edge blade is a transition between the ancient Ken and the Tachi, the precursor to the katana. It is mounted in katana fashion and has a brand new 10.5 inch tsuka core carved from basswood. The tsuka has an antique toned full rayskin wrap, and the tsukamaki is silver blue Japanese silk. The nakago is fairly straight, so forcing a heavy curve like the original core would compromise it, so I decided to follow the blade sori instead.

The fuchi and kashira are Higo themed, and the steel tsuba features dragonflies and a stream. The menuki are Ken menuki, harkening back to the origins of this blade.

The hamon is ko midare, sort of a cross between suguha and midare, and it becomes almost a fully hardened blade near the double edged portion. The hamon almost reaches the central  bo hi once it gets past the naginata hi. Not technically hiro suguha because of the undulations. However the hamon is narrower and more defined leading to the hamachi.

My tsukaito and sageo supplier does not make a matching colored sageo, but this color pairs well with many other colors such as goldenrod, which is almost the exact opposite color on the spectrum. The black sageo comes standard unless the owner finds another he wants for an added charge.

The katana now comes with a new fully rattan wrapped saya in a dark brown stain, and honey and black colored buffalo horn fittings. The blade is also in the final stages of repolish, giving it a brighter, whiter hamon pattern than before.
