Aoran Katana
Aoran Katana
The “Blue Orchid” katana is a Bushi forge folded blade that has been repolished and remounted. This katana features a 29 inch nagasa with a full length bo hi that is precisely carved. It terminates properly into a geometric yokote. The hamon is an irregular midare hamon pattern. The folded steel is a large mokume hada pattern, transitioning into a very thin, high layer masame pattern going toward the edge.
It has a brand new habaki made from a seamless casting of solid silver. The seppa are high quality coin edged seppa that are silver plated. The tsuba is of an Orchid flower and stone, with the orchids colored silver. The tsuka is brand new, carved from poplar wood, and the fuchi and kashira are custom as well. The fuchi is 40mm, hand hardened from copper (also a seamless one piece design) and then silver plated. It was made specifically for this blade. The kashira is steel, copper plated, then plated in silver like the fuchi. The kashira was also custom made, but not by me. Both pieces were left in a slightly tarnished, worn matte finish to add age to the appearance.
The tsuka has a full wrap of high grade Japanese samekawa with a large emperors node and a visible seam. The seam is very tight, after lacquering it is nearly invisible. The floral menuki are silver plated brass.
The saya then has been lacquered, the front in an ishime finish, the back in a dark brick red color, then clear coated over. With it is a blue sageo to match the silk maki.
The length of the blade and tsuka are approximate, I’ll have the exact measurements soon. This blade is in the newest line of Bushi forge folded pieces. They switched to a new kind of steel alloy, and the hamon is not as vibrant as previous pieces. However I was able to find a hazuya stone that worked with the steel hardness and was able to give it a more than decent polish. Dynasty Forge is introducing a third generation Bushi soon which will have much more visible hamon patterns out of the box. Since the hamon isn’t as vibrant as some of my instant selling pieces, I am keeping the price low on this piece. Future Bushi Forge Folded blades will not be this cheap.
