Sanko Nami Katana

The Sanko Nami has been completely repolished and the hamon pattern looks completely different. Why does it look so different? There is a lengthy explanation here.

The “Midnight Wave” katana is a Tamahagane steel stone polished Daimyo blade. The fuchi and kashira were plated in silver and antiqued slightly to have a darker tone, accenting the wave patterns. The seppa and habaki are brightly plated silver as well. The menuki are silver hat and boat paddles, symbols of Miyamoto Musashi and his duel on Ganryu Island. They have not been glued on yet, so if the buyer wants a different set that can be arranged.

The tsuba is a square Turbulent wave theme. The tsuka was wrapped in a full wrap of stingray skin purchased from Japan, and the tsukamaki is now a black doeskin ito purchased from Fred Lohman’s workshop. The ito is synthetic, and it has a nylon strip on the center which allows it to be wrapped incredibly tight without stretching. It provides an extremely positive grip impervious to sweat from the hands.

The hada of the tamahagane steel is an undulating masame hada. The hamon is a gunome - midare mix with beautiful swirls of sunagashi. The precisely carved bo hi lessens the overall weight making this an extremely balanced and lively sword.

Despite the extra work, the Sanko Nami is only listed at $1700. The blade has been given a full repolish for no extra charge. The hamon pattern is very different than before. The old polish was a heavy Kesho polish which hid most of the hamon pattern. The new polish livens up and accents many activities not visible before.

Katana comes with a black sageo, though a white sageo can be ordered for it as well.
